Casey Anthony and social media

Media is a amazing thing, you can talk to your friends and family from anywhere and at anytime. Media however is now a place for criminal trials, with trials being present on media people see what news shows and gossip shows want you to see to boost their ratings. In the Casey Anthony case you see how badly media can turn people against someone that they had never even heard of. News and gossip TV shows painted Casey as a monster for supposedly killing her two year old daughter without first knowing all the facts and they did such a good job of this, when Casey got out on bail and was staying at her parents house people would come onto the Anthony property demanding the 'baby killer' and saying her parents were horrible people for letting their own daughter live with her. Nancy Grace was one of the people 'investigating' the case on her show she shouted out her opinions like they were concrete facts and evidence that everyone should believe and listen to. Nancy Grace to...

american vs canadian coverage

I believe that during the trials no recording should be let out to the press as they could put their own spin on the footage that is shown, like how Nancy Grace turned a look between and lawyer and his client into the possibility of  a sexual relationship with no evidence to support her allegations. Media presents information in a way to make you feel a certain way about the case. Although I don't believe that media should be allowed to record in the courtroom, I do believe that there should be a camera guy in the courtroom so people can see what happened in the trial but only after the trial is done. Media is so influential that the people reporting on the cases should remain neutral to allow the audience to form there own opinion. I believe that when the cases are still on trial none of the information should be release as it can mess with the investigation. Then once again after the trial is over then all of the information can be released. The  person being put on trial an...

Media Consumption

There was almost a two hour difference between my guess and the actual amount of time consuming media. Although recording your usage of media for only one day isn't a very good way of tracking your daily media usage as different things affect the amount of time you spend on your phone reading/writing notes or watching videos. I was writing and more notes that day because of school and was on my phone and on Netflix more because I was just at home with my sister. I will at times put on Netflix as background noise when I'm on my phone so the house isn't quiet that increased my time by an hour. I also listen to music well doing chores or homework or when going through Instagram. I mostly am on Snapchat, Instagram and Netflix. The odd time I will go in Facebook to check my work schedule. I have one day a week where it is a no phone day it is usually a Sunday sometimes it's on a Saturday. My estimate was 10 hours. The actual amount consumed was 11hrs 54mins.

Auto Theft

In Canada we are the world leaders for auto theft. The most commonly stolen vehicles are Ford F-150, Ford F-250, Ford F-350 then Lexus GX460 then the newer fancier cars. the top reasons as to why people take the vehicles is for either short term transportation or "joyride", to commit another crime, to sell to an unsuspecting person or to sell aboard. Alberta is the province that you would most likely get your car stolen from you, with a rate of 536 thefts per 100,000 people.Well in B.C the rate is 295 per 100,000 people. Ways to prevent someone from stealing your car park in the more crowded section of the parking lot, make sure to always lock the vehicle and set the alarm, install an anti-theft device.

Notorious Canadian Murderers

Clifford Robert Olsen Jr. killed three boys and eight girls between the ages of 9-18 years old. All the bodies of the eleven children were found in a secluded area in Vancouver. Some of the victims had been raped and sodomized, some were stabbed, others were strangled or  bludgeoned. During the trial he plead 'not guilty' to ten of the  eleven counts of first-degree murder, however when the eleventh one was read, sixteen year old Sandra Wolfsteiner, he changed his plea to guilty to all eleven of the charges.   Olson was locked up for the first time in 1957, when he was seventeen years old, sentenced to nine months for burglary.  Over the next twenty-four years Olson has nearly a hundred convictions against him including   obstruction of justice, possession of stolen property, possession of firearms, forgery, false pretenses, fraud, parole violation, impaired driving, theft, break and enter and theft, armed robbery, rape, buggery and indecen...

Short and Long Term Impacts of Victimization

The short term impacts on victims of crime depend on the crime some may find financial issues or have physical injury's  preventing them from working. However many feel depressed, have post- traumatic  stress disorder, troubles  sleeping or are guilty believing that they could have prevented it from happening.  The long term effects of being a victim of crime is a shorter list consisting of complete lifestyle changes, suicidal thoughts or actions, continued problems sleeping or extreme crime preventive measures.  In the  Law & Order episode we watched on Friday Harper  had many of these effects after her victimization she experienced PTSD, problems sleeping, complete lifestyle change and would wear running shoes to bed to feel safer. Harper also had many locks on her door to prevent any unwanted strangers.

Is school dangerous

I believe that in today's society one of the most dangerous places is school because its a lot of people in one small space. Having that many people in a small area problems, arguments and fights are going to occur between the students and the staff. In school there are many different crimes that happen daily like substance abuse, theft ,bullying and assault. And others that could happen, but are very unlikely, like school shootings. Although school seems like the most dangerous place you can be, the place that tops all others is technology. Social media in particular is responsible for cyber bullying, the sharing of files, identity theft, and many more.
